Do we focus enough on thinking .
As we travel the road of our life there is a need to remember to think about how the things we discuss and how they effect both you and the people around you. Perception of ourselves and what is around us can make a big difference in how we view the world and our Faith.
One thing we can be sure of is that we are always thinking. Our brain is our engine, without it we do not go anywhere, even if we are not conscious of it,“thinking “is always happening.
You can’t breathe or blink without the brain sending messages to instruct the body to do these actions. So, in simple terms we have conscious thought that we are aware of and unconscious thought that just happens in the background.
I want to have a brief and very simple look at Conscious Thinking
To me a simple definition of thinking would be..
the action of using your mind to produce ideas, decisions, memories, etc.
I would expect a well-balanced “thinker” makes time to strategize but does not allow the thoughts of “things to come”, to interfere with doing the things that are necessary in the now.
Thinking too much can over complicate issues, it can lead to stress, anxiety and sometimes, the simplest of things cam be made in to complex nightmares of thought after thought, cascading in a never ending self perpetuating process that in essence causes indecision and gets you nowhere.
Not thinking can lead to thoughtless or insensitive actions, it can upset the work /life balance and can be just as destructive as over thinking.
If we do not take time to think and plan we can find we are very busy all the time because we have to react in the moment and so can find that we do in actual fact get very little done, this can lead to frustration because you never seem to get anywhere no matter how much you do.
This can also prevent you from doing things which may give your life a new level of enrichment because your just too busy to fit new things in.
Let’s consider another extreme, if you’re a very quick “thinker” you may not always have the patience to see all the facts that are being presented to you. This can lead to frustration from those delivering the message. I know there are times in life where we need to think and act quickly but there are also times when we need to stand back and reflect before acting.
So we can summarize this by saying, thinking too much can lead to stress and a lack of clarity for a clear path in life, but not thinking may leave you oblivious to what is happening around you and may make you busier and more reactive than is necessary.
Taking some time to think but not following through can lead to unrealized dreams and missed potential.
If we look in the bible there are many verses that relate to the subject as a whole but these are two of may favourites
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God is.
and
[Proverbs 10:14]
Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
When we bring God in to the equation it stands to reason that we have to take the time to think about our actions because he tells us we are accountable for them.
We can clearly see from the verses below that He will take care of our needs if we’re on the right path.
Matthew 6:37-38
37 Behold, I say unto you, that your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
38 Wherefore, seek not the things of this world but seek ye first to build up the kingdom of God, and to establish his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
In my humble opinion the smart way to traverse the road of life in regard to thinking would be to make time to think things through and ask
- Do I really need to do things the way I do?
- What am I trying to achieve?
- Is there a better use of my time?
- Why can’t I do more of what I want to do and less of what I need to do
- What do I want to do that I’m not doing?
Then
- Make lists
- Create Plans
And Follow Through…
